Minneapolis CNN —The collapse of the the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday is unfortunately not the first deadly collapse of a major interstate bridge in the US. About 140,000 cars a day traversed the I-35W bridge that once stood more than 100 feet above the Mighty Mississippi. Steve Helber/APIt’s not a complete apples to apples comparison between the I-35W bridge and the Key Bridge. The Key Bridge had about 22% of the daily traffic of the I-35W Mississippi River Bridge; however, the Minneapolis bridge was about 22% the length of the truss bridge in Baltimore. In the immediate aftermath of the Key Bridge collapse, Levinson told CNN that this event should hopefully bring attention to vulnerabilities of critical pieces of infrastructure.

The immediate impact of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday was viscerally clear: In minutes, the Baltimore Harbor went from a humming logistics hub to a chaotic search and rescue operation. Two construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge were pulled from the water, with six more missing and presumed dead. Seeing container ships sail through the port was one of my earliest memories of global shipping. Last year, the Port of Baltimore processed 1.1 million 20-foot containers worth of cargo, making it the ninth busiest port based on trade volume in the United States and the most important port serving our nation’s capital. It’s also the busiest U.S. port for car shipments, with more than 800,000 vehicles moving through its waters onto its docks and across its roads and railways in 2023.

Former Deliverr and Shopify employees told Insider last week's layoffs at Flexport capped the end of a multiyear rollercoaster marked by multiple complicated acquisitions and integrations, compensation issues, and culture clashes. The integration of the Shopify Logistics team into Flexport had been rocky, five employees said. When Shopify completed its acquisition of Deliverr in July 2022, employees' equity converted to Shopify stock on a one-to-one basis. This person added that the conversion from public stock to RSUs meant that the value of their Flexport equity was less than they expected. In a memo to employees, Ryan Petersen, Flexport’s CEO and its founder in 2013, said the company’s decision to cut staff was made to help return Flexport to profitability without raising prices.
